Underwater Volcano Could Erupt Off California Coast

We all remember learning about the Ring of Fire, but here’s what your schoolbooks skipped: there are active volcanoes lurking off California’s coast. One in particular, the Axial Seamount, 700 miles northwest of San Francisco, is rumbling with warning signs. Scientists say it could erupt before the end of this year!

  What to Know

  • 🌋Thousands of Quakes a Day: Over 1,000 small earthquakes are rattling the seafloor daily, signaling that magma is building up beneath the surface.

  • 🌋No Tsunami Panic: Experts say the eruption would likely be non-explosive. Think more Hawaiian lava flow, less Pompeii panic, with minimal risk to California’s coast.

  • 🌋Why It Matters: This isn’t just scientific curiosity. Axial’s eruption could reshape how we understand earthquake risk and volcanic behavior along the California coast.

San Diego’s Homelessness Drops 7%

For the first time in years, San Diego County is seeing a real decline in homelessness: a 7% drop, according to the latest Point-in-Time Count.  That includes major reductions San Diego, Carlsbad, and Oceanside.

A Little Deeper

What is San Diego County doing right? And can other major California cities follow their lead? Let’s take a look:

🏠What’s Working: Local leaders’ credit sustained investments in shelter expansion, mental health outreach, and housing-first programs.

🏠Families & Veterans Benefit: Family homelessness dropped a staggering 72%, while veteran homelessness saw a 25% decline. Experts say this is a clear sign that targeted interventions are working.

🏠Senior Crisis Grows: Not all the news was positive. One in three unsheltered people is 55 or older, and senior homelessness rose 5% this year.

🚨Why It Matters

Homelessness in California and America remains a staggering crisis:

  • More than 771,000 people are homeless in the U.S. and California accounts for nearly a quarter of them, with over 187,000 unhoused residents.

  • In San Diego County, officials say it’s a hopeful sign that investments in shelters, outreach, and services are making a difference. Still, they caution: the crisis is far from over.
