California’s Gerrymander Fight Targets Key Republicans
Governor Gavin Newsom rolled into downtown LA yesterday to sell his plan to redraw California’s congressional maps, a rally that even saw ICE agents outside, threatening arrests. The actual maps? Still under wraps.
But Politico got the scoop: in closed-door briefings Wednesday night, state lawmakers were shown the partisan breakdown of all 52 districts under the so-called Revenge Map and which Republicans are squarely in the crosshairs.
Popular GOP Congressmen who could lose their jobs in the redistricting effort:
Rep. Doug LaMalfa, District 1
Rep. Kevin Kiley, District 3
Rep. Adam Gray, District 13
Rep. Ken Calvert, District 41
Rep. Daryl Issa, District 48

Also under the plan, Democratic-leaning areas would be locked in as safe blue seats for potentially years to come.

The state GOP party released this statement:

Battle Ready
As we’ve reported, the plan has a steep climb ahead. Former Governor Schwarzenegger who championed California’s independent redistricting process, has vowed to fight it. Today he posted that he’s getting ready to battle against the Newsom plan.
I’m getting ready for the gerrymandering battle.

What’s Next
Lawmakers must pass a constitutional amendment for the ballot, plus companion bills to lock in the maps, cover the cost of a special election, and sort out logistics. And yeah, that hasn’t stopped Newsom from creating an ad that you will likely see running everywhere soon.
An ad has already been cut for a ballot initiative in California that technically doesn't exist, has not had a single hearing, and for an election that cannot legally take place without a change in state law.

Meantime in Texas
Texas lawmakers today failed to reach a quorum to pass the GOP’s new congressional map, so Governor Greg Abbott hit reset, calling a second special session to try and gerrymander five more seats for Republicans. The problem? Democratic lawmakers are still out of state, blocking the numbers needed to move forward. For now, Abbott’s plan is stuck in political limbo.
Thank you, President @BarackObama, for joining Texas House Democrats today.
Your words reminded us why we broke quorum:
Democracy isn't self-executing. It requires us to stand up and fight for it.We're honored by your support. #txlege

ICE Snatched High School Student Walking Dog
An 18-year-old Reseda Charter High School student was taken into custody by federal immigration agents last week while walking his dog.

Masked agents grabbed Benjamin Marcelo Guerrero-Cruz on a neighborhood street, allegedly letting his dog loose to dodge traffic on busy Sepulveda Boulevard.
Guerrero-Cruz, a soccer player with no criminal record, is now being held in a detention center with 40 adult men, according to his mother.
The Department of Homeland Security says the Chilean teen overstayed his visa by more than two years, violating the Visa Waiver Program that required him to leave by March 15, 2023.
Friends and supporters have launched a GoFundMe to help his family and cover legal fees.
